The 115 foot monument, called "a legend in stone" was the idea of Vance Sykes, a member of the class of 1907. It was originally built to honor NCSU Alumni killed in World War I and it is now a symbol of the universities past, present and future.
Construction of the monument began in 1921 and was completed in 1937 due to a number of halts in construction during the Great Depression and World War II.
The Belltower is a rallying point for the community as the starting point of the famous Krispy Kreme Challenge, a space where students pose for photos before they graduate and celebrate NC State's proudest occasions and achievements by lighting the Belltower red.
