Tasty Tuesday - PG Werth's

“Eat. Sip. Cheer.” —  Welcome to PG Werth’s, where Chef Hamm vibrantly brings to life his mantra of  ‘Old school comforts, new-school technique’. [For the record, I am not just referring to the culinary aspect. Although, I must say given his passion for culinary arts —it is quite impeccable].

Looking for fresh, local, and delicious? Well, you've now uncovered the place to be, but come while you still can as Chef Hamm plans on closing PG Werth’s in mid February. As a one-stop shop, PG Werth’s not only features restaurant, but a gourmet market and coffee bar as well.

From the ambiance, to the menu selection, it is impossible not to be overcome by a modern vibe with a hometown twist…which is exactly what Chef Hamm creatively plays up throughout his extensive menu selection. Chef Hamm tastefully brings his homegrown roots from Sanford, NC, to Raleigh, where you can expect to enjoy a hint of Blue-Ridge inspired flavors in his dishes.

Having a top-notch resume of food allergies myself, finding a restaurant worth going to isn't exactly a walk in the park for me. Naturally, I became even more intrigued after discovering Chef Hamm’s farm-to-table mind set.  Desiring to provide an array of alternative dishes catering towards individuals with food sensitivities and allergies in the Raleigh area, PG Werth’s delectably capitalized on this opportunity and ultimately reached new heights in offering more than the standard, souped-up salad.

Adequately established, Chef Hamm has several ventures on his resume, including Cafe 121 in Stanford, NC.  Although no two are the same, each establishment provides unique and individual offerings.  In the decision to take the lighter route over the Sir-Acha Gonna Do About It burger, I ordered the Blueberry Fields salad.  Beautifully presented on a bed of local greens were carrots, fresh blueberries, and prairie braised white cheddar finished off with a honey balsamic dressing to break-up the sweet profile-taste and candied pecans packing a crunch.

Aside from his restaurant ventures, Chef Ham will continue to share his love and inspiring passion for culinary arts by serving as the executive director/dean of the culinary institute at Central Carolina Community College. In addition he instructs cooking lessons as well.

Nestled on the ground floor of the 927 West Morgan apartment building is where PG Werth’s will continue to call home till mid February.  Having accomplished what he intentionally set out to achieve prior to opening the doors at PG Werth’s with arms wide in 2014, Chef Hamm has decided to scale back in the number of ventures he is involved in.

As I am saddened to hear that Chef Hamm has decided to lock the doors, I am just as pleased to admire what all he has contributed to the downtown Raleigh community during his time at PG Werth’s.  And with all-due respect, there is something to be said about going out on top — it's not always about how you start, but how you finish.
